Rachel Watson Art - Rachel is a freelance painter from Surrey view her portfolio here.

As well as working on my own body of work in my studio, I use my artwork wherever possible in other ways. I have dabbled in all sorts; from scenery painting for a puppet show and painting spiritual imagery for my church, to painting murals in a Romanian orphanage, designing my own Christmas card and taking part in a project to paint rubbish skips.

In late 2011 I was privileged to open my home studio as a new creative space to work in. My studio has become busier and fuller with a sudden flow of paintings being produced! I go through paintings very quickly and with variety in my content and aesthetic decisions. I let my inspiration lead me even if I end up jumping from subject to subject, which makes each painting fresh and exciting. I have a freedom to simply paint whatever moves me at the time I sit down to work, a freedom I didn’t have during my studies. I paint with acrylics, which is ideal for speedy paintings as it dries really fast.

Despite my sporadic approach, collections often develop within my work, as I discover subjects that continue to inspire or prove particularly successful.

I am inspired by the character in faces and the life in their eyes, more recently focusing on animals’ faces. I also love the diversity and beauty of the animal world, which keeps my passion for painting creatures alive.

Objects with reflective surfaces also inspire me, as I love to accentuate the contrast of the light and shapes hitting their surfaces.

At university I developed a desire for expressing something deeper within my work. I used Bible scriptures to inspire me and then became totally drawn in to producing work in response to my own annual trips to a Romanian orphanage. This work came from deep within and so took on new levels for me. My expression then of something deeper than an image has influenced my work today. I now draw some of my inspiration from my Christian faith, the poetry of scripture and my desire to express supernatural concepts and feelings.

My body of work about girls in a Romanian orphanage has created much interest, especially with Christian contacts for its links with faith. The work has been in ‘Thoughts’ Magazine (a free Christian youth magazine that goes out all over Britain) and the ‘Pentecost Festival’ Art Exhibition 2011, held at The Strand Gallery in London.

Since May 2011 I have been working as a
